The book, developed by Giulia Parola, Margherita Paola Poto and Gabrielle Natividad, represents the culmination of years of interdisciplinary research and educational efforts across various academic institutions, including the University of Turin. Rooted in the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, it critically examines the relevance and applicability of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in contemporary education, emphasizing collaboration and transdisciplinarity to address complex global challenges. This resource builds on the ECO_CARE project, an initiative focused on empathy, compassion, and care in water governance from the perspective of integral ecology. Funded by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, ECO_CARE has expanded into an extensive network involving universities and Indigenous communities across the globe, promoting interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges.
The book highlights innovative student-led projects from the University of Turin that employed methodologies like legal design and visual law to address interconnected SDGs. These projects integrated knowledge from environmental law, Indigenous law, and water governance to co-create solutions emphasizing SDG 14 (Life Below Water) in conjunction with other SDGs. It underscores the importance of blending legal frameworks with insights from other disciplines, including global health, Indigenous perspectives, and environmental sciences, promoting a collaborative vision for a “Common Future for All,” in alignment with the principles of Agenda 2030.
A key contributor, Gaby Natividad, brought her expertise in global health, climate law, and Indigenous law research. Her proficiency in participatory methods, legal design, and visual law enriched the project by transforming complex legal concepts into accessible formats and ensuring the inclusion of Indigenous and local voices. Through its comprehensive approach, the book serves as a vital resource for advancing education, research, and solutions aligned with sustainability, highlighting the role of interdisciplinarity, innovation, and community engagement in addressing global challenges.
